Kris Aquino made headlines on June 4, 2007, when she signed an endorsement deal with Facial Care Centre, a direct competitor to Dr. Vicki Belo's Belo Medical Group, which Kris had been endorsing for years. The signing took place on May 31, 2007, at a private meeting, and it immediately sparked speculation about the state of Kris's relationship with Dr. Belo.
In a text to Dr. Belo, Kris informed her of the decision to sign with Facial Care Centre, and Dr. Belo responded with grace, saying she understood Kris’s choice and respected her decision, emphasizing that she just wanted Kris to be happy. However, it was later revealed that there may be more tension beneath the surface. A source claimed that people close to Dr. Belo tried to prevent the release of Kris's billboard for Facial Care Centre, citing a "non-compete" clause related to endorsers switching to direct competitors.
PEP reached out to the Advertising Board of the Philippines (Ad Board) to inquire about the "non-compete" rule. The board clarified that a talent/model could not appear in a competitive advertisement for a period of three years after endorsing a competing product, but since Kris endorsed body sculpting with Belo and will now endorse facial treatments with Facial Care, they did not consider it a violation of the rule.
Facial Care Centre’s public relations officer, NJ Torres, confirmed that Kris’s contract signing was legal and emphasized that Kris would be endorsing a facial treatment, not a body treatment. Torres also mentioned that Facial Care had been attempting to get Kris as an endorser, especially after hearing rumors that other brands were interested in her.
Despite the professional fallout, Dr. Belo expressed that losing Kris as an endorser was not as painful as losing her as a friend, reflecting on their 13-year friendship. Kris, on the other hand, continued with her career, though the situation highlighted the complexities of personal relationships in the entertainment industry, with many noting that showbiz friendships can be fleeting.
This entire saga led to a comment from a PEP user, "no permanent friends sa showbiz talaga," capturing the sentiment that in the entertainment world, personal and business relationships are often subject to change.
