DOTr Doubles Student Fare Discount for LRT and MRT Rides
Good news for students who commute daily by train: starting June 20, train rides just got a lot lighter on the wallet. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that all students, including those taking up postgraduate studies, can now get a 50% fare discount on single journey tickets when riding the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.
This discount isn’t just for weekdays, students can enjoy it on weekends and holidays too. All they need to do is show a valid school ID for the current school year or a certificate of enrollment when buying tickets.
Transport Secretary Vince Dizon said the DOTr is also working on making the discount available for stored value cards and Beep cards soon, so students can tap and go without hassle.
According to Dizon, this bigger discount is part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s push to help families manage education expenses as the new school year kicks off. For many parents, every peso saved on commuting means more budget for daily allowance, school projects, or other needs.
For now, the government will cover the cost of the discount for LRT-1 riders. However, for LRT-2 and MRT-3, the operators will shoulder the income loss.
So if you’re a student riding the train, don’t forget your ID and enjoy the savings!
