Big Bang Theory’s Stuart Gets a Multiverse Mission in New HBO Max Spinoff
Get ready for a totally different kind of “The Big Bang Theory.” HBO Max is officially launching a brand-new spinoff, and this time, the spotlight lands on an unexpected fan favorite: Stuart Bloom.
Titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the series brings back comic book store owner Stuart, played by Kevin Sussman, as he takes center stage in a chaotic, multiverse-hopping comedy. The plot kicks off when Stuart accidentally breaks a device originally built by Sheldon and Leonard, unleashing a domino effect of cosmic disasters. Now, he’s the unlikely hero forced to clean up the mess.
But he’s not alone. Joining him are his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), the lovable geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and the ever-annoying yet brilliant Kripke (John Ross Bowie). As they journey across alternate realities, expect to see twisted versions of characters from The Big Bang Theory. In short, things get weird — and very funny.
This marks the fourth series in the Big Bang universe. The original show enjoyed 12 successful seasons before spinning off into Young Sheldon, which recently wrapped up after seven seasons. Another offshoot, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, is currently airing.
Chuck Lorre, one of the creators behind the original series, teams up with Zak Penn (Ready Player One) and Bill Prady to create this sci-fi-inspired comedy. The team promises a mix of smart storytelling, heartfelt moments, and the kind of nerdy chaos that made the Big Bang universe beloved in the first place.
“This is something totally out of my comfort zone,” Lorre admitted during the Banff World Media Festival. “I’ve spent decades writing characters who sit on couches and talk. Now we’re adding CGI, sci-fi action, and multiverse madness into the mix.”
Zak Penn, known for writing epic adventure stories, joked about being recruited for the show while deep in the Amazon, and Prady says it’s been “damn fun” bringing the series to life. According to Warner Bros. and HBO Max, fans can expect a story packed with heart, humor, and a ton of geeky surprises.
The show is also notable for being the first new series announced after Max officially returned to its HBO Max branding. With Emmy season coming up and excitement around all things Big Bang still strong, the timing feels right.
There’s no exact release date yet, but the buzz around this new sci-fi comedy is already growing. If you’ve missed the quirky humor of the original show or want to see familiar faces in an entirely new setting, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe might be just what you need.
