House Honors Sagip Pelikula for Saving Filipino Film History

For over a decade, Sagip Pelikula has quietly been doing a remarkable job rescuing old Filipino films from fading into obscurity. And now, as the project officially ends its run, it gets a well-deserved salute from the House of Representatives.

A newly approved resolution from Congress expresses the country’s heartfelt gratitude to ABS-CBN’s Sagip Pelikula for its massive contribution to preserving the legacy of Philippine cinema. The lawmakers praised the team’s tireless work in restoring hundreds of classic and iconic Filipino films, giving today’s generation a chance to experience the golden moments of our cinematic past.

Launched in 2011 through a partnership between ABS-CBN and Central Digital Lab, the project focused on scanning, digitally enhancing, and remastering films that shaped Filipino culture across different eras. From black-and-white prewar dramas to memorable blockbusters from the 2000s, Sagip Pelikula gave new life to over 240 titles.

Among the most notable films they brought back to life are Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?, Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Himala, Oro, Plata, Mata, Anak, Tanging Yaman, and Dekada ‘70. These aren’t just movies, they’re cultural landmarks, and Sagip Pelikula made sure they won’t be forgotten.

After nearly 14 years of dedication, Sagip Pelikula officially wrapped up on March 31, 2025. The House recognized its role as ABS-CBN’s pioneering film restoration unit, acknowledging its vital part in preserving the nation’s cinematic treasures.

The resolution was backed by dozens of lawmakers led by House Speaker Martin Romualdez and several representatives from across the country. They collectively recognized not just the project, but also the people behind it, filmmakers, restorers, and film lovers, who gave their time and energy to make sure these stories live on.

ABS-CBN’s Sagip Pelikula responded through a heartfelt post on social media, thanking the House for the recognition. They also paid tribute to everyone who had been part of the journey, promising to continue advocating for the protection of Filipino film heritage.

Under the leadership of Leo Katigbak, the project earned awards and honors both locally and internationally. From the Gold Quill Award by IABC to recognition from the FDCP, PASADO, and other cultural groups, Sagip Pelikula became a symbol of excellence in Filipino film preservation.

While the chapter may have ended, the stories it saved will continue to speak to generations. What Sagip Pelikula has done is more than just technical work, it’s a gift to the future, a reminder of who we are as a people, and proof that our films, like our stories, are worth saving.
