OPM Legend Freddie Aguilar Passes Away at 72

The Filipino music scene is mourning the loss of a true icon. Freddie Aguilar, best known for the timeless classic “Anak,” has died at the age of 72.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by George Briones, the general counsel of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), where Freddie once served as national executive vice president. According to Briones, the beloved singer passed away early morning of May 27 at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City.

A source from the Philippine Heart Association shared that Freddie was transferred to the Heart Center from another hospital shortly before his passing. However, due to the country’s Data Privacy Act, the hospital has not released further details and has advised the public to wait for an official statement from the Aguilar family.

Following Islamic customs, arrangements for his burial are reportedly being made to take place within 24 hours.

Freddie Aguilar wasn’t just a music legend, he was also a respected cultural figure. In 2016, he was appointed as Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts by then-President Rodrigo Duterte. His influence went far beyond the stage, and he used his platform to promote Filipino culture and patriotism.

His signature song “Anak” continues to echo across generations. Translated into various languages, the emotional ballad about parental love and regret has touched millions worldwide and remains one of the most iconic Filipino songs ever made.

Freddie’s voice may now be silent, but his music and message live on in the hearts of many.
