Marvel Shakes Up Avengers Release Dates and Welcomes a Familiar Face Back

Marvel fans will have to wait a little longer for the next big Avengers movies, as Marvel Studios has officially pushed back the release dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Instead of premiering in May, Doomsday is now scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, while Secret Wars has been moved to December 17, 2027. The change gives Marvel more time to build up the story, and fans more time to speculate.

One of the biggest surprises leading up to these films was the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the Marvel universe. But this time, he’s not suiting up as Tony Stark. At Comic-Con 2024, he revealed he's taking on the role of Doctor Doom, a powerful and complex villain known for his intellect, ambition, and larger-than-life ego. “New mask, same task,” he joked, adding how much he enjoys portraying layered characters.

Doctor Doom plays a key role in Marvel’s future storytelling plans. Marvel describes him as a scientific genius with a dangerous thirst for power. His presence will be especially important in setting up the events of Secret Wars.

Earlier this year, Marvel also confirmed an exciting cast for Avengers: Doomsday. Returning heroes include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. They're joined by Vanessa Kirby as Susan Storm, Florence Pugh as Yelena, and Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, among others.

Directing duties for both movies will go to Joe and Anthony Russo, the talented team behind some of Marvel’s most beloved films like Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War. After Endgame, the Russo Brothers originally thought they were done with Marvel. But something about Secret Wars pulled them back in.

In a recent interview, Joe Russo explained that Secret Wars is not just another chapter; it’s one of the most epic Marvel stories ever told. “It’s the reason we came back,” he said. And for a story that grand, introducing a character as significant as Doctor Doom makes perfect sense.

With such a strong cast, legendary directors, and the return of Robert Downey Jr. in a shocking new role, these next Avengers films are shaping up to be some of the biggest Marvel events yet.
