Director Jason Paul Laxamana Confident in the Bright Future of 'Mathon' Duo

Director Jason Paul Laxamana is optimistic about the long-term success of the “Mathon” tandem, the pair of Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings, who starred in his Netflix film, Sosyal Climbers.

Laxamana is certain that their talent and strong on-screen connection will ensure they have a lasting career.

“They’ve got what it takes, and their talent is undeniable. Talent always wins in the end,” Laxamana shared during an interview in Quezon City on Wednesday evening.

He added that while he isn’t concerned with any personal matters between the actors, their professional abilities alone promise a bright future ahead, both as a love team and as individuals.

“From the start, their natural chemistry and creativity enhance every scene. They bring a special spark to the table that makes everything more exciting,” Laxamana continued. “They’re both quick-witted and full of surprises—something that really stands out in every take.”

Vitto Lazatin, the head of content at Netflix Philippines, echoed this sentiment, praising the duo for bringing “depth, chemistry, and energy” to the project.

“No one could have portrayed these characters better than Anthony and Maris. They gave life to Ray, Jessa, Kiefer, and Penelope in a way that was truly unforgettable,” Lazatin said.

Sosyal Climbers, set to stream on Netflix starting February 27, is the first original film from the collaboration between the streaming platform and ABS-CBN Studios.

“We’re really proud of this collaboration. It started in late 2022, and it’s been a great experience working with one of the best storytellers in the industry,” Lazatin reflected.

He also described the romantic comedy as a “fun, heartfelt, and charming” story, capturing the essence of the classic Filipino narrative of striving for a “better life.” At its heart, it’s a relatable tale of love and the complexities of maintaining a relationship.
