Wilma Galvante as Judge in EMMYS

The 34th International Emmy Awards Gala will take place on Monday, Nov. 20 (Tuesday in Manila), in New York City. Among the jurors is Oprah Winfrey, with the Philippines' Wilma V. Galvante, Senior VP for Entertainment at GMA 7, serving as a judge in the comedy division.

Galvante, known for her role in GMA 7's globally recognized Millennium Day broadcast, takes pride in showcasing Filipino creativity in television. Her involvement in the International Emmys reflects the growing acceptance of the Philippines in the global TV industry. She was invited to judge by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which honors excellence in television programming produced outside the U.S.

Galvante reviewed eight comedy entries from various countries over three weeks, considering factors like direction, writing, and casting. She wasn’t allowed to judge any Philippine entries to avoid bias. She noted that Philippine comedy tends to be situational, while other entries explored different themes like racism in a humorous light.

Galvante will attend the International Emmy World Television Festival in New York on Nov. 18-19, where she’ll be in the company of Steven Spielberg, recipient of this year’s International Emmys Founders Award. She plans to pitch GMA Pinoy TV to the Hollywood legend.

With her extensive contributions to Philippine TV, Galvante’s involvement with the International Emmys is a testament to the rising influence of Filipino talent in the global TV scene.
