I was born during the Super Mario Bros 20th Anniversary, which meant I grew up hearing about Mario but never actually playing the original NES games until a few years ago. Even so, watching the Super Mario Galaxy movie felt like stepping into a colorful dream, one packed with every Nintendo character you could imagine.

Critics seem eager to tear this film apart, but they’re missing the bigger picture. Sure, the story may not be the strongest, but that’s not really the point. The movie is intentionally stuffed with characters and references from Nintendo’s vast universe, which is exciting in itself. By opening the door to so many familiar faces, the film is laying groundwork for potential sequels or even spin-offs, like a Super Smash Bros. movie. It’s a strategic move that hardcore fans can appreciate.

Visually, the movie is a treat. The animation is bright, dynamic, and full of clever nods to the classic games. Whether it’s side-scrolling-inspired levels, blink-and-you-miss-it cameos, or subtle Easter eggs, every frame feels designed to make fans grin. Even the music pulls from the iconic Mario soundtracks, creating a sense of nostalgia that hits perfectly if you’ve ever spent hours trying to 100% a Mario game.

Action sequences are a highlight, too. Mario, Peach, Toad, and the gang get into fast-paced battles and wild chase scenes that are entertaining and energetic. There’s no overthinking here, just pure fun, and that’s exactly what a Super Mario movie should be. We don’t need Inception-level plot twists or emotional drama. This is Mario, meant to make you laugh, cheer, and smile.

Sure, some of the story beats feel crowded or underdeveloped, and a few characters don’t get as much time as they could. But honestly, that doesn’t matter. The movie’s charm lies in celebrating Nintendo’s universe in a big, bold, and sometimes chaotic way. Fans will catch nods to the games they grew up with, and even newcomers can enjoy the sheer energy of it all.

For me, the Super Mario Galaxy movie delivered exactly what it promised: fun, nostalgia, and a glimpse into a universe that’s full of possibilities. If you’re a fan of Mario or just love a good animated adventure, this movie is an absolute joy to watch.
