Project Hail Mary Review: A Surprisingly Fun Movie Date, Even for a Non Sci-Fi Fan

It has been a while since I last stepped inside a movie theater. The last one I remember was watching Moana 2 back in December 2024, so this trip to SM Cinema already felt a bit special. Honestly, I was not even expecting much from Project Hail Mary. Sci-fi is not really my thing. But since I was on a date with Jepoy, I gave it a shot.

Turns out, I enjoyed it more than I expected.

The movie follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. As the story moves forward, pieces of his past slowly come back, helping both him and the audience understand what is really going on. At first, I thought it might be confusing, but the way the story is told actually made it easier to follow.

Even if you are not into science or space movies, the film keeps things interesting. It explains things in a simple way, and there are moments that feel light and even funny. It is not all serious and heavy like I expected. There is a good balance between the big problem they are trying to solve and the small, human moments along the way.

What I liked the most is how the story focuses on connection and sacrifice. It is not just about saving the world. It is also about helping others, even if you do not know them personally. That idea really stood out to me and made the movie feel more relatable.

Of course, watching it with Jepoy made the experience even better. It is one of those movies that becomes more enjoyable when you have someone to share reactions with, especially during the intense and emotional scenes. What started as a simple movie date turned into something memorable.

For someone who does not usually watch sci-fi, I can say this is a good entry point. It is easy to follow, engaging, and has enough heart to keep you invested until the end. I walked into the cinema unsure, but I walked out glad that I gave it a chance.
