After turning heads at international film festivals, Maris Racal’s drama film Sunshine is finally heading to local cinemas in the Philippines this July 2025. Sunshine is written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone, a name familiar to many Filipino moviegoers for her emotionally grounded storytelling. This time, she dives into the life of a teenage gymnast, played by Racal, who learns she’s pregnant right in the middle of tryouts for the national team. The story explores her inner battle, whether to pursue her dream or embrace motherhood.
The film also features a strong supporting cast including Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Meryll Soriano, Jennica Garcia, and Annika Co, bringing more depth to the narrative.
Even before its Philippine debut, Sunshine was already making noise abroad. It was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival (where it won the Crystal Bear for Best Film), and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Director Jadaone shared in an interview back in October 2024 that she deliberately prioritized international exposure before releasing the film locally, aiming to build credibility and momentum ahead of its Philippine screening.
While there’s no exact release date yet, fans can expect Sunshine to light up the big screen this July, a must-watch for those looking for heartfelt, coming-of-age drama with real-life stakes.
