Apl.de.Ap, Jo Koy Speak Out After Heartbreaking Incident at Filipino Festival

A devastating tragedy struck the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver, Canada, leaving 11 people dead and many others injured after a deliberate vehicle attack on Saturday night. The annual festival, held in the Sunset on Fraser neighborhood, is meant to celebrate Filipino heritage, but it ended in heartbreak this year.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old man believed to be behind the attack. Authorities revealed he has a significant history of mental health struggles and previous encounters with the police.

International artists Apl.de.Ap and J Rey Soul of the Black Eyed Peas had just finished their performance when the incident happened. Apl.de.Ap shared his sadness on Instagram, saying their hearts were shattered for the victims and their families. He thanked everyone who reached out, and encouraged the community to continue sending prayers and support during this difficult time.

J Rey Soul echoed the sorrow in her own post, expressing how excited they were to be part of the celebration, only to be overwhelmed with sadness after hearing the tragic news. She shared her heartbreak for the families who lost loved ones.

Comedian Jo Koy, although not present at the event, also expressed his grief. He reminded everyone that the festival was supposed to be a joyful gathering to honor Filipino culture, not a scene of mourning.

The Filipino Canadian Community & Cultural Society of BC (Filipino BC), the group behind the event, also released a statement. They admitted they were struggling to find the right words to describe their pain and urged the community to check in on one another and seek available support services. They also requested people not to share videos of the incident out of respect for the victims and their families.

For those needing help, victim services are available through 1-800-563-0808, the 310 Mental Health Line at 310-6789, and the Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433.

At a time meant for celebration, the community instead leans on each other for comfort, showing that even in the darkest moments, unity and love shine through.
