Another MMFF Controversy?

During the 32nd Metro Manila Film Festival's Gabi ng Parangal, Celia Rodriguez reportedly responded to co-presenter Rustom Padilla’s compliment about her beauty by saying, "Pareho tayong maganda dahil hindi tayo nang-gagapang ng awards." She was referring to the controversy surrounding the awards, especially the winner of the Gatpuno Antonio Villegas Award, Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo.

While Celia confirmed saying the comment, she denied throwing the cue card, explaining that she "dropped it by accident." Many were shocked by her bold statement, but Celia didn’t seem to care. She told Funfare, "I don’t care. I don’t want to compromise anymore!"

Her comment only fueled the drama surrounding the festival, which is no stranger to controversies. In the ‘70s, Celia was also involved in a FAMAS awards issue when her Best Actress win sparked resignations among members.

This year, many questioned the MMFF’s decision to award Enteng Kabisote Best Picture. The judges' other choices, like Judy Ann Santos for Kasal and Cesar Montano for Ligalig, were praised. But the issue lies in the MMFF's criteria, which gives 40% of the score based on commercial success. Enteng Kabisote was the top-grosser, which is why it won.

The Metro Filmfest has shifted from focusing on quality films to what makes the most money. While MMFF needs funds to stay afloat, this focus on business over culture has disappointed some, like Malou Santos of Star Cinema.

In the end, the controversy will die down, only to be revived next year. It’s a cycle, and many believe the whole MMFF is just a big joke now.
