ABS-CBN shows get Asian TV Awards nominations

ABS-CBN once again captured the attention of award giving body, Asian TV Awards, with three of its best News and Current Affairs programs, TV Patrol World, The Correspondents and XXX: eXplosibong, eXklusibong eXposé. The Asian TV Awards also recognized the hosting abilities of Ms. Sharon Cuneta and has nominated her as Best Entertainment Presenter.

From 1,400 entries from 15 countries in Asia, three programs of ABS-CBN’s News and Current Affairs Group have made it to the list of nominees in the prestigious Asian Television Awards (ATA) 2006. TV Patrol World’s entry, "The Wowowee Tragedy" was undoubtedly a conflict of interest coverage for ABS-CBN News. It tested the journalists’ character, but they conquered it by going out and reporting the news without fear or favor, treating it as they would any big news story. TV Patrol World is nominated under the Best News Programme category.

The Correspondents’ entry "Juvenile Injustice" discussed the dark truth about how child offenders are treated in two of Manila’s city jails, Malabon and Navotas - being the smallest and dirtiest in the country. Host Karen Davila tackled the extreme injustice done to juvenile delinquents and provided alternatives to better rehabilitation. The Correspondents is nominated under the Best Current Affairs Programme category.

XXX: eXplosibong, eXklusibong eXposé is also nominated under the Best Current Affairs Programme category. Reported by three veteran broadcasters Julius Babao, Karen Davila and Henry Omaga-Diaz, their entry for the ATA 2006 were three fierce exposés about a government hospital, two generations of incest and a big-time swindler victimizing jewelers in Batangas.

On the entertainment side, Megastar Sharon Cuneta adds another international commendation to her name after receiving her first international acting award from 31st International Festival of Independent Film in Brussels, Belgium for her moving performance in "Crying Ladies." Mega, who went back to television early this year with her musical-talk show, Sharon, was cited for her very insightful, impressive presentation of the show’s episode, "Happy to Be Gay," which discussed the topic of homosexuality. In Sharon this Sunday, watch Mega display her gift as a TV host as she discusses the plight of OFWs with her special guests Pokwang, balladeer Erik Santos and the richest Pinay in the US, Ms. Loida Nicolas-Lewis. Sharon airs Sunday nights after Rated K on ABS-CBN.

The winners will be announced at the ATA gala dinner event on November 30 and will be held in Singapore. The best of the best in Asian TV, regional celebrities and top executives across Asia’s broadcasting and production industries will attend the said event.
