When I watched the first week of GMA 7's new superhero show, instead of remembering the old days of Mars Ravelo's Captain Barbell, I felt more nostalgic for the Smallville TV series. Viewers who watched Smallville on ABS-CBN’s Studio 23 can’t deny that the new Captain Barbell story feels like a copy of Smallville.
From the crashing spaceship to the red truck and the kind couple, it feels like you’re just watching a Filipino version of Smallville.
And it doesn’t stop there. The flying cars look like they were taken from the movie The Fifth Element, and one of Captain Barbell’s enemies wears an outfit that looks a lot like a villain from Star Trek.
As the show goes on, we might see even more copied ideas. I can't believe GMA 7 allowed this. They’ve disrespected the original story made by the great Mars Ravelo and replaced it with something that feels unoriginal.
At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if Captain Barbell becomes allergic to Kryptonite too.
